Admit it, the nights are always dark and menacing as you walk around in your own backyard. What if there were a movie with a powerful message of hope to make you feel at peace again? A movie with characters that will leave an impression on you even after watching it for the 100th time? The Forest is a film with a deep ecological message that every person should see. It's about how people's actions can affect the world around them, and about following your dreams to find personal fulfillment. This film is sure to be one of the best films you've seen all year. The movie, based on the book by Daniel Woodrell, tells the story of two families in a forest area in the Texas Panhandle. One family is affluent and lives well off in a large home while the other is poor and lives barely subsistence living in a lean-to. The contrast between these two lives is vast, but has one thing in common-they are both haunted by evil spirits. When tragedy strikes both families it's up to an unlikely hero named Wes to find out what's going on. The Forest is filled with memorable characters that are troubled yet resourceful. There are three characters that drive this film forward, Wes, Connie and Danny. All three have their own problems that they have to deal with, but are the only hope for the two families to be able to escape. Wes is played by Matthew McConaughey who knows how to play a troubled Texan. When you look at his family history, it's easy to see why he was cast. Both of his parents were alcoholics, his mother died of cirrhosis of the liver at age 44, and he has many siblings that had run-ins with the law or had their lives end tragically. He may play another troubled Texas man in Dallas Buyers Club, but there is something about him that makes him likable on screen. He's the guy that you want to have a beer with. The two other stars are Wes' daughter, Connie, played by Izabela Vidovic, and his nephew Danny, played by James Badge Dale. Both of them are very young actors that do an excellent job in their respective roles. These two characters go through difficult circumstances that will change their lives forever. Both of them grow up faster than they should have had to because of the situations they found themselves in. By supporting these characters is Gabriel Basso who plays Wes' son Tom. He's the character that has aged the most throughout this story and has to deal with his own demons as well as saving the lives of his brother and sister. Basso is a great actor and he does a good job in his role. The Forest is an ecological story, but it also shows the different paths that people take and how they affect their lives. The violence that we see in this film is made to be graphic, but it's not for the sake of gore-it's to show how quickly things can happen if we aren't careful. The Forest reminds us how fragile life is and what we stand to lose if we don't take action now. This film will make you think about your life and what you can do with it before it's too late.
